International Cooperation: Asian Scrum Project 

The Asian Scrum Project is international cooperation initiative by the Japan Rugby Football Union (JRFU) . The initiative aims to develop the Asian region and deepen mutual understanding through rugby. Since its launch in 2011, JRFU has been building bonds across Asia by using the power of the game to build bonds across borders, aiming for the realization of a sustainable society. 
Project Objectives 

The Asian Scrum Project has three objectives:

  • 1Rugby Development/Promotion

    Supporting the rugby development/promotion from grassroots to high performance, promote sustainable growth, primarily within the Asian region.
  • 2Mutual Understanding and Coexistence through rugby

    Using rugby,deepen mutual understanding among Asian nations and strive to realize multicultural coexistence through the game. 
  • 3 Human Resource Development and Social Contribution

    Encourage the personal growth of participants and support them to leverage the experience gained through rugby to tackle social issues

The Asian Scrum Project focuses on three goals of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By improving the quality of education through sports, promoting gender equality, and achieving goals through global partnerships, the project contributes to a sustainable future.

Background

Background

"Tender for Asia"   Japan’s bid to host the Rugby World Cup 2019 was campaigned under the theme"Tender for Asia". By hosting the Rugby World Cup  in Asia — a departure from previous editions held exclusively in traditional powerhouse nations—Japan pledged to contribute to the development of rugby for the entire region. Following the successful bid, the Asian Scrum Project was launched in 2011 to take this promise into action.

The Asian Scrum Project is widely active across Asia and other parts of the world. We have delivered many programmes tailored to the specific needs and conditions of each country. programmes are diverse, from training local coaches and players, support tournament operation, and infrastructure development, etc.

Signed the "JICA-JRFU Scrum Project" agreement with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)

2015-2020

Implementation of the "JSC-JRFU Partnership Programme" as part of the "Sport For Tomorrow" initiative by the Japan Sport Council (JSC)

2017-2024

Cooperation in the "JENESYS" (Japan-East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youths) programme conducted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Launch of the Youth Leadership Programme

Signed a tripartite agreement between JRFU, JRLO, and JICA

  • JICA-JRFU Scrum Project 

    JICA-JRFU Scrum Project 

    In partnership with the JICA, this project dispatches JICA Rugby Volunteers to various countries.
  • Youth Leadership Program 

    Youth Leadership Program 

    Targeting the youth generation in Japan and across Asia, the programme aims to develop next-generation leaders. Participants learn about rugby development, addressing social issues through rugby, as well as learning international leadership and management skills.
